REMEMBERING DEJI AGARAH, a Young Leader called too soon
On this day, August 6th, 2023, the air was charged in tension as both Teams Eastern United and Cheverly FC prepared to play the semifinal FA Cup qualifier. As players perambulated around, kitting up for the epic game, Deji alias DJ stood in his team's quarter with a sharp laser focus, edging his team to dress to warmup before the game. The energy exuding from him was full of confidence and determination. His team was already out of the regular season playoffs, this was ultimate opportunity to reclaim the lost chances they had in previous game. In no time the game was blown to action, off like a speeding cheetah and bold lion, he attacked the defense of Eastern United, creating havoc for the back line. He was determined to draw the first blood and within 15mins of the game, DJ had converted the first goal. That seemed to have release more boost of energy in him, as he kept putting pressure on defensive line. In a twinkle of an eye, as the Eastern defense had fired the ball off towards the end of Cheverly half, as he throttled back with the center back, DJ slumped to the ground. The defender in seeing this, screamed for help. He covered in face as though he had seen the unseeable, it took a little over a second before folks started rushing to the field because no one knew what was happening. A day we will never forget, we have heard of this happening, but we didn't expect it to our own turf or place. The skilled professionals in medical field - doctor, nurses, EMT all gathered taking turns trying to assist to resuscitate him through CPR while the rest prayed asking God for mercy and others stayed on the phone to describe to 911 correspondent on what is transpiring, receiving guidance on what was happening while we waited arrival of first responders. DJ appeared to have been stabilized when the ambulance took him to the hospital. Unfortunately, the League Office was notified, DJ was called home. Rest in Peace and Power DJ, you have left an indelible void. You will be forever missed.
